Providing personalized integrative medical care, uniting the ancient medical wisdom of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine with modern biomedical approaches, to help my patients achieve optimum health and well-being.
Dr. Serra's private integrative medicine practice provides patients personalized, one-on-one medical care, taking the time to individually assess and treat each patient's particular health imbalances, in order to achieve optimum health outcomes. An integrative medical approach combines aspects of conventional Western medical perspectives with traditional Eastern medicine practices to create a holistic treatment option for patients.
She believes that it is critical to consider the whole health picture (mind and body, diet and lifestyle) when she assesses and treats her patients,. This means that she uses Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine to treat not only symptoms, but seeks to identify the underlying causes of pain, illness, or disease -- which in modern times include long-term high stress, chronic pain, depression and anxiety, inflammatory conditions, endocrine imbalances, and auto-immune issues.
In addition to using Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine to treat her patients' conditions, she also offers Wellness Consultations to help her patients improve their vitality and quality of life through healthy diet, nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments that are easy to implement and integrate into your daily life. She has specialized training and knowledge on whole-food nutrition and well-researched vitamin and dietary supplements, that can be used as an adjunctive therapy to significantly improve her patients' overall health and well-being.
She frequently partners with M.D.’s (Primary Care Providers, Specialists, Surgeons), Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, and Massage Therapists in order to provide optimum complementary health care for patients.
Dr. Serra has worked in the field of Holistic Medicine for over 20 years, and has practiced Medical Acupuncture for the past 15 years, specializing in the treatment of Orthopedic and Neurological conditions, Sports Performance Medicine, Internal Medicine, Women’s and Men's Health conditions.
Medical Acupuncture is a term that refers to the advanced level of medical training (5 years post-graduate) and the doctoral degree Dr. Serra has received. It also describes her approach, integrating the ancient medical insights of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine with modern biomedical research and the cutting edge of scientific understanding.
She was selected as a Delegate to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Summit on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public, held in 2009 in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Serra also has advanced training (M.A. Clinical Psychology, 1995) and previous clinical experience as a mental health professional, and uses these clinical skills and insights (such as in-depth understanding of brain chemistry and how it affects not only mental but physical health conditions) to help diagnose and treat her patients in order to achieve optimum mind/body health and wellness.
Additionally, she has worked in both public and private sectors as a consultant on the psychosocial aspects of international public health campaigns.
Pain, whether it is acute or chronic pain, limits your activities, saps your energy, occupy your thoughts, and has a significant negative impact on your home and work life.
Acupuncture targets pain in two ways - locally, at the site of trauma or injury, by directly reducing inflammation and increasing tissue oxygenation, and by relaxing spasmed muscles, tendon attachments, fascia bands, and soothing irritated nerve bundles. Acupuncture also works to relieve and modulate pain at the sensory brain level, where pain receptors receive and relay information sent from the affected areas of the body, and responds by releasing natural painkillers (endorphins) and various anti-inflammatory agents.
Stress Management is an often overlooked, but very clinically important health care strategy, that impacts many aspects of our physical and mental health -- especially with all we've been through individually and as a society over the past few years with the COVID-19 public health crisis.
For example, Chronic Stress increases cortisol production, which has a cascade effect that negatively influences metabolism, leading to reduced immunity, increased inflammation, higher blood pressure, decreased energy or ability to focus, decreased digestion and assimilation of nutrients, retention of belly fat, emotional, hormonal and sleep disturbances.
Acupuncture stimulation directly engages down-regulation of the sympathetic nervous system and Vagus nerve activation from a state of high stress "fight or flight" response, to a calmer "rest and digest" condition, so that various body systems (digestive, excretory, endocrine) can then operate more effectively and efficiently. Therefore, by addressing chronic stress and promoting deep mind/body relaxation, Acupuncture can help heal and even reverse many of these stress-induced symptoms and conditions.
Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, targeted nutritional supplementation, and simple lifestyle modifications (such as adding walking, Yoga, Meditation, gardening and reducing screen time) can all make significant positive changes in your overall health and wellbeing!
Acupuncture is very effective in treating Sports Injuries, or to enhance Sports Performance. It does so by relieving inflammation, increasing oxygenation at the local area of injury or overuse, relaxing spasmed muscles, tendons, and tensed fascial bands.
Often, the repetitive motions in sports activities such as tennis, golf, and running can create chronic strained muscles, tendons, and ligaments, or can irritate nerve bundles (as in Tennis Elbow).
Acupuncture from a doctor who is trained in Sports Medicine and Functional Movement therapies can not only quickly and relatively painlessly relieve pain and inflammation, but also improve muscle/tendon health and strength, thereby improving Sports Performance.
It is no wonder that professional athletes, from golfers to swimmers to baseball and football players regularly use Acupuncture and Cupping to treat injuries and improve performance!
Live Long, Live Well: Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine have been successfully used for thousands of years to promote optimum physical wellbeing and mental acuity, leading to natural rejuvenation of facial and body appearance, enhanced immune response, quicker recovery from illness or disease, thereby increasing vitality and longevity.
These effects are created by the stimulation of the brain and nervous system by Acupuncture -- which increases tissue oxygenation and blood vessel perfusion, optimizes organ system functions (such as heart, kidney, bladder, colon, and liver function), helps the body properly identify and release toxins at the cellular level, improves the tone of skin and muscles (by relaxing areas of excess tension and tightening looser areas), and stimulates the natural release of collagen at the superficial skin level.
